Don't waste too much time memorizing recipes though, you'll be surprised to find that most people don't know their drinks. As far as learning classic cocktail recipes, you can probably just get a cheap handbook online. Move on to the next place if you're in that situation. Just don't get caught up working in the same barback / busser job for more than 6 - 12 months if the place doesn't give you an opportunity to move up. Get to know the bartenders and have them become your sensei. Get a barback / busser job at a restaurant and work your way to get behind the bar. The ServSafe food handling certification just ensures you know about food safety and sanitation.Īs far as a certification for "becoming" a bartender goes, don't bother. The TIPS certification ensures you know to ID people / cut people off when necessary / serve pregnant women if they order a drink. You'd be better off getting a TIPS and ServSafe food handling certification.
